LLMs.txt Files - Who, What, Why…
What Are LLMs.txt Files & Do We Need To Be Concerned About Them
You may have heard the topic of LLMs.txt files being thrown around in the main subject of Ai search. If you were like me, you may have thought two things. 1. What is a LLMs.txt file, and 2. Why do we need yet another file on top of our robots.txt file and our sitemap. (I thought Ai was supposed to be smart and advanced, why do we need a specific file just for them).
If you are like me, there are more questions that arise from this topic and with the research I have done, there are less answers. So, let me break this down for you, so we can both be on the same yellow-brick path of confusion towards the Emerald City of potential answers.
What is a LLMs.txt File
Before you jump on the brick pathway of questions to join up with the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Lion, we need to know if this yellow-brick road is really the right path to take. (Remember, there was a red-brick road heading in the other direction). So, let’s start off with the basics.

A LLMs.txt file simply stands for “Large Languages Models” and the purpose is to simplify and condense your site’s information and services into a simple, easy to follow document for Ai to review and crawl. This involves a lot of special characters and summarized content to let the Ai bots know what your site is about, what you are offering, and how that could help with a search that was performed on ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other Ai services that seem to be popping up everywhere.
The characters that are used in these files replace html coding that Ai bots cannot (or just don’t want to) crawl. These characters are like the signs people hold up at the airports. They are quick, to the point, and easy for someone to find. For example, instead of a standard h1 tags (which holds your most important purpose Keywords), the LLMS.txt file would use #. For an h2 tag, you would just use ##, and so on for each Header Tag. There are other characters, such as > for blockquotes, - or * for bullet points, and so on. Each one is to just simplify the coding so an Ai bot can find answers from your site quicker and easier.
Potential Benefits for using LLMs.txt Files
So, now that we are on the right path with the understanding of what a LLMs.txt file is, the next question is why are these important. I mean, we already have a robots.txt file that tells Search Engines what not to look at and we have a sitemap on our site to tell them which pages are important - why do we need another file for Ai bots?
The main purpose for these files is to simplify the content on your sites so that the important pages and data are upfront and center when an Ai bot crawls your site.

Think of it this way, you are on ChatGPT and asking it, “what is the best time to visit Myrtle Beach for a beach Vacation”. ChatGPT will then take off like a flying monkey and start skimming all the sites looking for the main points of “Myrtle Beach”, “Seasonal Weather”, and other potential key points that would yield a solid, and useful answer to the user. So, when the Ai bot hits your site for answers, do you want an old blog from 2020 telling it that the beach is great place to escape and still be socially distanced from everyone else, or would you rather it find an article you wrote that describes a more up-to-date timeframe that tells a guest that April and August are wonderful times to visit since you have more availability in your rentals, while the beach is less crowded from the tourist since school is either still in session or it is about to start once more? This is where a LLMs.txt file will come into play for your site.
On your LLMs. txt file, you can put the more recent blog post upfront and on this file so that when an Ai bot crawls for the answer, they will see this file and blog post first.
Do I need a LLMs.txt File to be Competitive
So now the main question is, do we need to be concerned with having and implementing a LLMs.txt file? The answer is…not really. Though the concept is there and the purpose is understood, Ai is still not quite there yet. It seems like someone jumped to the end of the story without reading about the journey before they come to a conclusion.
The actual idea of a LLMs.txt is starting to become more and more established, but the reality of it is that Ai bots do not yet recognize these tiles yet. So, you can spend the time making these files and condensing your site’s more important information onto a simple file, only to hand it over to Toto.
Follow the Yellow-Brick Road

Overall, we are all still skipping down the Yellow-Brick Road looking for the Emerald City in hopes that the Wizard will explain if we need a LLMS.txt file or not. There is still so much we are learning about this new concept, along with waiting to see how Ai bots will respond to them. More and more articles are being tossed at us like the apples from the Trees on our path. Though they each hold their own in terms of useful data and information, the main fact still stays the same - we still have a long journey before we fully know if LLMs.txt files are necessary to support a strong SEO front for your site.
